I don't often rave about individual products here on the blog, but when I come across something life changing - I just have to let you know. Gone are the days of having to work your fingers to the bone applying polyurethane to finish your products, we now have Wipe-On Poly. It comes in glossy and satin, and it is really one of my favorite new products.
We seal furniture to protect its finish and extend the life of the piece. My sealant of choice is polyurethane for its durability and less maintenance in the long run. In the past, you've had to brush on polyurethane, which can leave streaks and runs in your finish if your not careful. We now have wipe-on poly, which simply wipes on with a clean rag. Its perfect for those pieces that have a lot of decorative detail and those hard to finish table tops, too! There are no streaks as it almost goes on like wood stain. You can brush it on, but my favorite way to apply it is to simply pour some into a clean, lint-free rag and wipe it on. Then you continue to wipe the piece down until the excess is rubbed in. I usually apply 2-3 coats & sand in between each coat after it has thoroughly dried with a fine grade steel wool. You're left with a finish that's a smooth as a baby's bottom. I use cut up, old t-shirts to apply the sealant, so I can just throw it away when I'm done. The only down side to this product is that it is a thinner water base product, so its not ideal for surfaces that get a ton of wear & tear like floors. Wipe-On Poly is great for doing simple touch ups & for sealing pieces throughout your home. If you find yourself in need of a super easy sealant for your projects, try out Wipe-On Poly, and you won't be disappointed! I am not being compensated for this post, but I do like to share products that I find useful with my readers. Follow me on Facebook for insights into design and art and as always- Happy Designing!
